More Satish Gujral In Interview with Art Today
Q1. Even before you saw yourself as a painter, what was it that you had an urge to draw?
A1. Painting to me came as a means of communication rather than anything else. As I began to receive each communication by graphic gestures the response naturally also became graphic.
Q2. Of the different phases and subjects, which one remains in your memory as the most alluring? And can you say why?
A2. With me art is essentially autobiographical-a documentation of the journey of life. The phases therefore are a response to the changing topography, of the varying flora and fauna as I moved in transmission-rather than containing myself to a particular style by which the world has got accustomed to recognizing me. I let the changing life find its own style. Doing otherwise is to me like changing the body to fill the clothing.
Q3. Why is this chosen painting among your finest works? What did you enjoy painting the most in it?
A3. For each artist it is usually the latest that mirrors his immediate mood and as such feels like the best. At least it is so in my case, in selecting this work.
Q4. What, in retrospect, do you think has remained your greatest shortcoming?
A4. The inability to reach the horizon that always remained distant.
