Sanjay Bhattacharyya In Interview with Art Today: Q1. Even before you saw yourself as a painter, what was it that you had an urge to draw? A1. It was from the Phantom comics. I used to draw Phantom everywhere, except on a proper drawing book. Q2. Of the different phases and subjects, which one remains in your memory as the most alluring? And can you say why? A2. Old vacant houses are always a great attraction to me. They tell me stories and create an unusual sensation in me with their colours and textures or perhaps it is the silence in them from which I discover the untold history. Q3. Why is this chosen painting among your finest works? What did you enjoy painting the most in it? A3. I can never say that any of my works is the finest since I am not satisfied with any of them and feel that each work is yet to be finished. This particular painting I like because it is totally different from my other works. I enjoyed the highlights with which I have created the effect of an open sun on the neglected Goddess. Q4. What, in retrospect, do you think has remained your greatest shortcoming? A4. There are so many, I just don’t want to count them! Perhaps the fact that I change my style/content too slowly. But change for the sake of change seems unnatural to me.
